Baikonur Cosmodrome Attracts Thousands of Tourists for Rocket Launches in 2026
Growing interest in space tourism drives infrastructure upgrades and easier access

Launch platform in Baikonur.
More than 7,500 tourists have visited Baikonur Cosmodrome in 2026 to witness four rocket launches, according to the Tourism Industry Committee. The steady flow of visitors highlights rising global interest in space tourism experiences (ғарыш туризмі тәжірибелері) [ğaryş turizmi täjiribeleri] and the increasing appeal of rocket launch viewing events (зымыран ұшыруды тамашалау іс-шаралары) [zymyran uşyru dy tamashalau is-sharalary] at one of the world’s most historic space facilities.
Over 11,000 visitors came to the complex in 2024, demonstrating that interest in Baikonur remains consistently high despite annual fluctuations. The city currently offers seven hotels with around 700 rooms, supporting tourism infrastructure and accommodating international guests. On launch days, Kazakh tour operators organize special programs, reinforcing the development of tourism service packages (туристік қызмет пакеттері) [turistik qyzmet paketteri] and enhancing visitor experience management (келушілер тәжірибесін басқару) [keluşiler täjiribesin basqaru].
The cosmodrome remains a unique world-class site with strong tourism potential due to its historical and technological significance. Baikonur, established in 1955, is the world’s first and largest operational space launch facility, known for launching the first artificial satellite and the first human into space. Its legacy continues to attract global attention, strengthening its position as a center for heritage space tourism (ғарыштық мұра туризмі) [ğaryştıq mura turizmi] and scientific tourism destinations (ғылыми туризм бағыттары) [ğylymi turizm bağyttary].
To improve visitor access and viewing conditions, a 400-seat observation platform has been opened, offering better visibility during launches. This development is part of broader efforts to enhance infrastructure and ensure safe and organized access to key areas, contributing to tourism infrastructure development (туризм инфрақұрылымын дамыту) [turizm infraqurylymyn damytu] and improved public viewing facilities (қоғамдық бақылау алаңдары) [qoğamdyq baqylau alańdary].
Authorities are also working to simplify access to the cosmodrome, including plans to introduce electronic permits and reduce application processing times. These measures aim to remove administrative barriers and make the destination more accessible, aligning with goals for digital access systems (цифрлық қолжетімділік жүйелері) [cifrlıq qoljetimdilik jüieleri] and streamlined tourist entry procedures (туристердің кіру рәсімдері) [turisterdiñ kiru räsimderi].
Baikonur has been designated a priority tourism destination under Kazakhstan’s Tourism Development Concept for 2023–2029, reflecting its strategic importance in national tourism policy. In addition, a regional roadmap for tourism growth in the Kyzylorda region for 2024–2027 includes infrastructure expansion and initiatives to increase visitor numbers. These efforts support long-term tourism development strategies (туризмді дамыту стратегиялары) [turizmdi damytu strategiyalary] and broader regional economic growth initiatives (аймақтық экономикалық өсу бастамалары) [aymaqtıq ekonomikalıq ösu bastamalary].
As interest in space-related travel grows worldwide, destinations like Baikonur are becoming increasingly important within niche tourism markets. Experts note that space tourism is evolving beyond private commercial flights to include ground-based experiences such as launch observation and museum visits, contributing to specialized tourism sectors (мамандандырылған туризм секторлары) [mamandandyrylğan turizm sektorlary] and expanding global travel trends (жаһандық саяхат үрдістері) [jahandyq sayahat ürdisteri].
As written before, the first launch from a reconstructed Baikonur pad is expected to be streamed live, further increasing global visibility and attracting new audiences. Such initiatives combine technology, media and tourism, reinforcing Baikonur’s role in international space outreach (халықаралық ғарыштық насихат) [halyqaralyq ğaryştıq nasihat] and digital broadcasting expansion (цифрлық хабар тарату кеңеюі) [cifrlıq habar taratu keñeyui].
